< The man to read a road, Hanyangdoseong_Seongbuk> Audio Guide

Slow like breathing, when do you walk on a road so?

On a paved road that we are walking as spinning wheels everyday
It’s getting harder to find a road that makes me feel my own value in calmness.

Maybe because of it, since whenever, a road that exuded scent of human,
a road that the more I look in, the newer it becomes
Unconsciously I lay my eyes on a slow-walking road.

People are living in a house built hundreds years ago
A place that trace of old road left between buildings.

Roots, digging its way through gap of stones
Heavy moss, grown on the wall,
And towns of colorful roof, huddled nearby there

To look for the time we’ve forgotten
Here I’m walking on Hanyangdoseong, the Seoul City Wall.

Line 4 Hansung Univ. Station, Exit 6
Take on shuttle busNo 3 and off at the top of Bukjeong Village.

Look around Bukjeong Village peaceful like mother’s breast.
And then raise your eyes up,
You’ll see Baegak Mountain Trail rolled away like wave.

Bukjeong Village, the departure point of Hanyangdoseong, the Seoul City Wall,
We begin to walk from there, making Hanyangdoseong as a companion.
Let’s go to lower part of the wall, Jangsu village.

Follow up an alley from senior community center of Bukjeong Village,
We canwalk along stairs from Waryong Park to outside of the wall.
Our Hanyangdoseong has quite different view of inside and outside.

The wall’s inner roadseems to be laid underground.

Walk on there and take a look at outside of the wall
We can see every different view while walking.

The other way, the wall’s outer road which is exposed from the bottom,

That road is good to touch stones and walk along village and forest trail.

Comes down along the wall’s outside
We’ll arrive at Seongbuk-dongrest area with small gazebo.

From now on, we’ll pass the lost section of Hanyangdoseong, the Seoul City Wall.
Walk down from the lost section, the street will be there,

And then take an alley of signpost “Hyehwamun Gate”

Hanyangdoseong’s patchy figures between private houses and building
will be shown again.

Kyungshin High School. See bottom of high cement wall.
Can you find out tiny and cute stones there?

Follow up this road which seems connected or broken
There is Hyehwamun Gate at the end.

Hyehwamun Gate had original name ‘Honghwamun Gate’.

After the construction of Changgyeonggung Palace, which main gate has the same name with it
Honghwamun Gate was changed to Hyehwamun Gate
Which means ‘Edify people by a favor’

Then, now out of Hyehwamun Gate, shall we go to Jangsu Village connected to Naksan Mountain Trail?
Let’s cross the street
And walk to stairs by guideboard ‘Naksan Mountain Trail’
From here on,
You can have a close look the outer wall’s body stones called ‘Chesung’

Originally when Hanyangdoseong, the Seoul City Wall was built at the first time,
Walls on mountain area were built of stones,
while those of flat ground were built of rammed earth.

Then, after the reign of King Sejong(1422), several sections of wall were changed with maintenance in times.

Natural stones were usedin the reign of King Taejo(1396)
Darkish stones like a cluster of pea are from the reign of King Sejong(1422)
Cube stones as if a mason cut it with all his soul are from the reign of King Sukjong(1704)

By the way, who heaped up all this stones?

In 1396, after construction of royal palace, royal ancestral shrine and altar,
Hundreds of thousands of people from whole country were mobilized to heap up this stones.

It is said that stones were cut by hands of people
with only small tools like chisel and hammer

I think people’s heart to trim stones one by one.

So, look around the wall built in each period while walking
The stone tablet written ‘Jangsu Village’ is seen.

Passing this tablet, keep following up the wall enclosing Jangsu Village like a roof
You will arrive at ‘Ammun’ (Secret path) toward inside of the wall.

Ammun was built
to move soldiers secretly
and to supply goods.
It is said that this gate is usually close by huge stone except for war.

We are walking outside of the wall.Instead of going to inside of the wall,
Let’s go to Jangsu Village’s alley to ‘Village Mason’s Small Café’.

Jangsu Village is the town having nostalgia of old alleys,
where were crowded with boisterous noise.

There are six alleys with low wooden bench in the village.
This bench is used for town meeting
and for anyone who tried to go up a steep ascent.
Maybe because of firm wall standing strongly and surrounding village
In Jangsu Village, instead of exhausted life,
I can expect endearing and warm future

There is Jangsu Village’s old ladies rest area.
Would you like to take rest for a while? Flex legs and drink water.

Close your eyes while wind is blowing
This windy alley is not easy to come in usual.

Perhaps mountain’s energy which comes down along Bugaksan mountain
could become down along Hanyangdoseong, the Seoul City Wall.

I imagine so many people passing through here for a long time.

Joseon’s scholars, who came from a long distance thrumeandering ways just for taking the royal examination once a year
Peddlers, who sold goods from here to there and carried letters
People, who went in and out for some business
Every moment, that all passengers with fatigued body felt relieved
for the Wall over there.

That time has embraced stories, which run to flow along Hanyangdoseong, the Seoul City Wall.
Right now here, at this very moment I come to realize it’s been lasted to us.

The road is always like this.
Nothing was there but People come, and the road appears.
No one comes, and then the road is gone.

The road of Hanyangdoseong wouldn’t be gone too, if we walk there long, long time.
So it’ll be with us, won’t it?

Hanyangdoseong, protecting Seoul as always with thousands stories
Even now, it lives and breathes with us.
