I want to share my faith that when you are going through a hard time,
someone will be there to help you, that you are not alone.In January 2010, I was in Indonesia right after it was hit by a severe earthquake, and I saw the desperation in people who suffer from poverty for their whole life. Seeing them accepting their fate of poverty without any question had opened my eyes, and I began to think about sharing with others regardless of their nationalities, regions, or race. I truly wanted to reach out to them.
People on the earthquake site did not even have a shelter to lay their exhausted bodies. I got rid of camera crews and reporters, and tried to do whatever I could to help them. I did not want photo opportunities or being reported for doing what I came here for, which was to help the earthquake victims.

One of the social workers who came with me seemed to read my mind, and told me, “you have built a home. These kids who lost their home during the earthquake now has a decent place to sleep tonight. People here thought nobody cared and nobody would come for them, but you came, a foreigner and famous actor. You came and played with their children and shared their pains. It really was a great comfort to them. I want to show the world how you really felt their pain, shared your heart, and sweated to build their homes. At the very least to your fans. The love and hope you gave to these forgotten people. And I want to urge them to join us. Who knows? It might encourage more people to join and help these desperate people.”
She was right. The idea hit me like tornado. The home I built today could multiply to hundreds, or even hundreds of thousands.
Ever since, I had been thinking about the ripple I could make. Then something happened like it was fate. 12 January 2010, the very next day I left Indonesia, another earthquake hit Haiti. I was in States then, and I knew that I had to go to Haiti, because I had seen the life after earthquake; the misery and devastation. These people could not help themselves. They desperately needed help from the other side of border. I wanted to help by whatever means, so I asked to air the footage from my Indonesian volunteer work along with the breaking stories from Haiti. In this on-air material I did the narration, and I was able to convey the pain and sufferings of earthquake victims.
There is a saying that your body follows to where your heart goes. While I was working in public office as a part of my military duty, I had a chance to recognize my influence as an actor. Before starting working there, I took a part in a Korea-Japan cultural exchange program. I was told the funds raised from that event went to Mongolia to build schools in rural areas. I thought that was amazing. “The good whishes and money from Japanese people who love a Korean actor go out to help children in far away Mongolia...” I realized that only love transcends borders and races, and that it was my responsibility as a person with such influence. It also reminded me of my childhood dream. I wanted to build a world where children lived without ever knowing poverty.
Many people ask what is justice. I think justice means love. The more people share love, better it is.
It has just began. I do not want to rush into actions without thinking it through. I want to care for people who are close to me first.
I want pave the way where people can talk about the world worth living for. GILSTORY should be a place where people come together and share their happiness with others. The story of KIM Nam-gil, the story of the path KIM Nam-gil takes, and the story of people who walk the path with KIM Nam-gil. The platform where all these stories and paths meet is GILSTORY.

The stories of people I met along the wayCulture & Art NGO ‘GILSTORY’, registered in Seoul City, S.Korea, is established on April 8th 2013 to create the value of cultural sharing as Global Culture &Art Social Platform which is set up to corporate philanthropic activities. Around a hundred of cultural artists are together with us to create cultural art contents and to make the way to spread the value of sharing.
There are people on every way of the world. The way that people have walked, of which story is our history and valuable culture.
